On Tuesday, 30th of January after having visited the Stellenbosch University and Launch Lab our driver Billie drove us further inner country to a small vineyard owned by the couple Luca and Ingrid Bein. As former Swiss veterinarians they have always loved the Cape Wine region and travelled a lot to the Cape. One day the temptation was too great, and they bought a small farm in the heart of the Stellenbosch winelands. Since they enjoyed good wines and also wanted to make their own fine wines, they decided to go back to school. Four years later they graduated with a B.Sc. in Viticulture and Oenology from the University of Stellenbosch. Since then, they have devoted themselves entirely to the production of their Merlot.
The sun was shining very bright, and it was a very hot day when we arrived at their farm. The friendly dog Rolex welcomed us and soon Luca and Ingrid came out to and told us about their career and the specialty of their wines. Afterwards Luca showed us the wine farm and cellar and explained us the effort and labour it takes to make good wine. After that we went up to the showroom and did a wine tasting. Luca explained us all the specificities of the bottle we were about to taste and then poured us to taste. We tried their sparkling rose wine, then two different types of red Merlot. All were very good. In the end we were offered to buy some bottles at a special price which most of us did.

During our field trip, we visited Monkey and River, a software development and design consultancy with a global reach and offices in both South Africa and the Netherlands. They're not a typical software company; they're a passionate group dedicated to creating software experiences that are not just functional, but truly meaningful.
Their approach, as they explained, is all about putting the user first – a concept they call "human-centered design". This isn't just lip service. We learned about their meticulous process, which involves in-depth research to understand user needs, followed by prototyping and rigorous testing to ensure the final product is not only effective but also a pleasure to use. Their commitment to accessibility was particularly impressive – they clearly believe that great software should be usable by everyone.
Monkey and River's diverse portfolio showcases their expertise across industries. We saw examples of their work, including a custom ERP system that streamlined operations for We Buy Cars, the user interface design for the MoyaPay Mobile Wallet, and even an enhanced online booking system for South Africa's National Parks (SANParks). Seeing these complex projects transformed into user-friendly solutions was truly inspiring.
The entire visit left a lasting impression. The team at Monkey and River clearly goes above and beyond to create software that not only works well but also makes a positive impact. Their passion for technology combined with their human-centered approach is a winning combination, and it's exciting to see what future projects they'll tackle.
